Many of us are feeling very uncertain of what the future holds for 2021 and are facing many stresses. You may think that being stressed is solely a mental state, but that is not true, stress can affect your entire body, including the health of your hair, skin, and nails. Your body responds to changes in your psychological state, including stress, depression and anxiety that can cause new skin issues or existing ones to flare up.
When you feel stressed, the sympathetic nervous system releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline into your body. Cortisol causes increased oil production in your skin, which can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts. Many adults suffer from adult onset acne, largely due to stress related issues.
Additionally, psychological conditions cause increased internal inflammation. When the body perceives a threat, the immune system sends out a response to handle it – that response is inflammation. Under stress the immune system overreacts sending out an inflammatory response. Inflammation can manifest in many chronic inflammatory skin conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea in more sensitive skins.
To help combat the effects of stress on the skin it is vital to maintain a good skin care routine every day, regular exercise, eating a healthy balanced diet, make sure you get a restful nights sleep and take some time out to relax and re-energise your soul.
At Thrive we recommend using natural and organic skin care products, such as Dr. Hauschka and Esse.
